The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel to give 1-(2,6-dimethyl-4-(phenylamino)phenyl)ethanone as red-brown syrup: 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.30 (d, J=8.2 Hz, 2 H), 7.10 (d, J=7.7 Hz, 2 H), 6.99 (d, J=4.2 Hz, 1 H), 6.71 (s, 1 H), 2.47 (s, 3 H), 2.18 (s, 6 H); ESI-MS: m/z 239.5 (M+H)+.
